Close the notepad and go to the folder C:/windows/inf in command prompt Browse through the files to find the ".inf" which was related to the faulty device. ps. how is the NIC or ethernet cable preventing a windows XP repair installation? If it always freezes exactly at the "37 minutes" mark, I doubt that's failing hardware, if it hangs at different points, I would point to failing hardware.

I'm not sure of the exact cause, but I've seen it about a dozen times in my career without any real hardware / CD problems. This is nice because with that I can browse the d drive and try to launch files. Do I need to change to the C directory or is it OK at C:\WINDOWS>? Can't install the old version of Acrobat because it fails due to newer version already installed.

Found out SOMETHING interesting though: when I type 'start d:' it launches Power Desk Pro which is what I use instead of Windows Explorer.
