The only computer I have that still has MSE on it, and with which I can tinker, is a Windows XP one. Microsoft Security Essentials icon is set to "Show Icon and Notifications" and now it appears in the task tray.BTW, Donna, I uninstalled Comodo Internet Security, Avast Antivirus and Thunderbird.
